How to extract a kick drum from a full mix

If you want the kick from a finished record, to study it, layer it or sample it, you have three choices: hunt for the isolated hit in the song, filter it out with EQ, or use AI separation. This guide covers the third, and where it works and doesn't.

What you get from DrumSplit

5. Download the ZIP in 24 hours and open the Kick file.
6. Find the hit you want. Drop the Kick file in your DAW or sampler, and look for a bar where the kick plays alone, with no bass or vocal on top. That is usually where the cleanest copy lives.

Getting a usable one-shot

The stem is a whole song of kicks, not one clean sample.

• Look for exposed hits. Intros, breakdowns and the bar before a drop often have a kick with nothing else playing. Those give the best isolated results.
• Pick a hit and check its tail. Zoom in. If you see reverb or other instruments in the tail, cut the sample before it fades.
• Fade the start and end. Short fades prevent clicks.
• Layer rather than replace. A separated kick often works best underneath your own kick, adding the character of the original while your sample carries the weight.
• Check phase. If you layer two kicks, flip polarity on one to see which sounds fuller.

Where kick isolation is hardest

Bass guitar and sub-bass. A kick and a bass share the lowest frequencies. When they play together, the separation has to decide which energy belongs to which. You may hear some bass in the Kick stem or a thinner low end in the Music stem. Listen for this on the lowest notes.

808s. In a lot of hip-hop and trap the 808 is both the kick and the bassline. The model may treat a long 808 as kick, as bass or a mixture. Try Puncher and compare, and be ready for the answer to be "somewhere in between".

Heavy compression and limiting. A loud master glues the kick into the rest of the mix. Transients can be softer than on the original recording.

Double kick and fast patterns. Metal double kick can smear together in the stem. Individual hits are clearer if you slow the section down for study.

Low-bitrate sources. Lossy compression removes detail from the kick's click, which is the part you may want most.

What it cannot do

• It will not return the original multitrack. The Kick stem is an estimate.
• It cannot add what is missing. If the click was masked by a guitar, the stem will reflect that.
• It is not a license to use a recording. Sampling from commercial records without clearance can be a copyright problem for a released track, even if the stem is isolated.

How it compares

• Standard stem splitters give you a single drum stem, then you would use EQ or a gate to try to find the kick.
• Moises says on its own site that Pro accounts can separate kick, snare, toms, hi-hats and cymbals. It is a subscription practice app, so check its plans for pricing.
• Other drum-focused tools exist (for example WaveMachine Labs ReStem, which its retailer lists as splitting kick, snare, hi-hat, toms, ride and crash), each with its own pricing. Run the same song through two of them if the result matters.
• Demucs is free and open source, but outputs one combined drum stem, so kick isolation needs another step.
